POULTRY POWER: PHASE TWO OF THE FEMINIST COALITION FARMING INITIATIVE
In April 2023, following the successful launch of the Feminist Coalition Farming Initiative in partnership with Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery, the Feminist Coalition decided to expand the project, also to include low-income women in Ogun State.
We have now increased the number of women participating in the Feminist Coalition Farming project from 10 to 22 since our last update.
A total of 14 women were selected across two communities in Ogun State — Likoyun and Oke-Odun. All women have received training on poultry rearing, 15 chicks each, a rearing cage, bags of feed and poultry vaccinations. In addition, the beneficiaries receive monitoring and supervisory visits from the Amo Farms team and quarterly support.
Before the program’s expansion, we worked with our partner Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery to conduct evaluation studies and adapt lessons learned from Phase 1 in Ikorodu, Lagos State. This was to ensure improvements in implementation were applied in Ogun State.
To date, of the 209 Noiler birds received, we have recorded a 99.5% liveability index compared to the pilot phase. All beneficiaries have indicated efficient management of birds resulting in a high growth rate and overall performance of the flock. Beneficiaries continue to express satisfaction with the low input, high return nature of the Noiler species and have expressed interest in remaining in the program.
In the coming months, we anticipate egg production and bird sales, with proceeds from sales being used not only to restock but to provide a source of income and nutrition for all beneficiaries and their families. We will continue to support our beneficiaries, not only with chickens and cages but also with bags of feed, monthly check-ins and professional advice through our partners.
As we continue to provide program participants with avenues to income generation, we are also creating a pathway to make the knowledge to do so accessible to more low-income women.
