An Update On The Feminist Coalition Girls Education Program
The first set of FemCo scholars have now completed their first year of secondary school. When we started this journey, we were fuelled by the belief that every Nigerian child has a right to quality education. About 18.5 million children, the majority of whom are girls, do not have access to education in Nigeria, a figure up sharply compared with 2021 (UNICEF, 2022)
1.8 million university undergraduates are stuck at home, 6 months on, due to indefinite nationwide strikes calling for better funding. Now more than ever, we’re fighting to ensure Nigerians have inalienable access to education.
One year on, the first 12 FemCo scholars could not have made us more proud. They have settled in, and they have excelled. They’ve also won awards — individually and as a group, including:
- Maths Queen
- Neatest Boarder (Junior)
- Best Behaved Boarder (Junior)
- Neatest Hostel Room (Group)
- Outstanding Boarder for the term
- Inter-house Sports Competition — Grand Winner (Group)
- Soccer Competition — Gold Medal (Group)
- Soccer Competition — Silver Medal (Group)
- 4x100m Race — Gold Medal
- Sack Race — Silver Medal
